The concept of a warrior has changed little in history; one who fights to defend his or her ideals or society. Yet the methods and tools of a warrior have evolved into something more complex and dynamic today. From the three novels—The Nibelungenlied, Njal’s Saga, and Beowolf—readers are exposed to the concept of a warrior in vastly different contexts. Why are women now accepted as warriors in modern society? As such, we will see an internally consistent world built on the shoulders of warriors and how their motivation and technology has propelled them into a more complex world. The ethos/role of a warrior has changed little despite the context of war changing completely.
The philosophy of the warrior is still the same after hundreds of years, where the ethos has not changed. The goal remains the same to fight for one’s country or kingdom and did so under a certain code of the warrior. One of the most noticeable changes is the evolution of the word “warrior” and “knight” to modern day “soldier.” A warrior is a more general term that defines a person experienced in combat and warfare. A knight is a member of the warrior class of the Middle Ages in Europe that followed the code of law known as chivalry. The knights were adept in combat, trained in metal armor with horses and adept at every weapon such as lances, swords, and shields. They excelled in the arms, displayed courage, gallantry, loyalty, and avoided coward acts. Lastly, the soldier is defined as a member of a nation’s armed forces in modern day. One complexity with the modern soldier is the diverse class. A knight was just a knight or a leader in the novels. In modern day, there are privates, specialists, corporals, sergeants, lieutenants, and more rankings. Warriors in modern society aren’t all soldiers in an official capacity,
