Philosophy of Education

The field of teaching is one of undoubted complexity that has questioned the nature of students, knowledge, and education since the beginning of time. Due to the dynamic and controversial quality of this area, it is necessary for a prospective teacher to develop his or her personal philosophy of education, whether it is a hodge-podge of several standard examples or one clear viewpoint. My own philosophy derives from a little bit of each of the five basic philosophies with essentialism marginally coming on top and existentialism representing the least of my teaching attitudes. If we believe reason and knowledge is already discovered, complete, and static despite varying circumstances, progress would have stopped a long time ago. Advancement in industry and research would be nonexistent, for instant. Our American culture requires constant questioning and reevaluating to propel our lives and future, a dynamic characteristic of Western society that has accounted for where we are today. This accounts for the relative nature of knowledge. On the other hand, knowledge is built is built upon a foundation of what has been discovered and is known to be true that supports additional findings. This includes scientific laws and ethic principles described in countless holy books and philosophies, to name a few. If there is no absolute knowledge, the existence of relative knowledge makes no sense in that its accumulation and creation holds no relevance if they never stands the chance of ever being considered absolute.

After examining the nature of students and knowledge, the topic of education naturally follows, as it builds from the first two issues. The overall purpose of education is to instill knowledge and the capacity to discover knowledge upon students so they may be informed people of character in the present as well as the future. This should be accomplished through the presentation of academic subjects as a core to expound upon in knowledge, appreciation, and
