I am a stay-at-home mom. When I used to hear the words stay-at-home mom, I would picture; a mom eating bon-bons, lounging on the sofa watching soap shows all day. This is a common stereotype for stay-at-home moms, who have choose to let their careers go out the window to stay home with the children; however, I have chosen to be a stay-at-home mom while being a full time college student, as well as being a full time mom. In order to dispel some of the stereotypes of a stay-at-home mom, allow me to share a typical day in my life as a stay-at-home mom of my nine month old daughter. The test for all mothers is going out in a public place with a small child! It seems simple enough just to run to the grocery store to pick up a few items for dinner, or maybe we ran out of something during the week. I have to bundle her up in her snowsuit. Before that, I have to pack the diaper bag; it never fails that if I don’t bring one, she ends up pooping. Most of time when she does poop in public, it’s the kind that explodes out everywhere. Moving on from the horrific stories about poop, I pack the diaper bag with the usual diapers, wipes, butt cream, teething ring and tablets, and some snack foods. We are off! After listening to Kaydence fuss for about five minutes, she falls asleep in the back seat in her car seat. Ten minutes later we arrive at the grocery store; the next task is getting her out of the car without waking her up. I hate waking a sleeping baby.
By eleven o’clock, we are back home and the television is on. This time it’s my choice; I turn on discovery health. The volume is on low and I enjoy a few minutes sitting down and nursing the baby to sleep while learning about gastroenterology. Once the baby is napping, I’m off to the kitchen to start lunch. I normally have salad. I usually wait to prepare the baby’s lunch.
