Reading is the act of understanding, deciphering, comprehending or interpreting everything that is written down by any means whether it is handwritten, digital or electronic. Reading can be from checking simple text messages to comprehending extremely sophisticated poems. The simple act of reading can be associated with newspapers, books, dates, instructions, self-written work, expressions, information on a computer or websites, essays, poems, and just about everything that is readable. Reading requires determination and passion. Reading can take a person from the present to the past or future, to Italy or to Rome, to the library or kitchen (or even the loo!).Without this simple act, our day would be wasted. It is not possible to make a day more meaningful by reading something (not to many people). All the other activities, if not equally, are as productive and useful as reading.
Reading does not have the same importance to everybody. Unfortunately, many people of our country are illiterate and are, sadly, unaware of the pleasure of reading. They have survived their entire life being deprived of education. This fact does not show that their entire day has been wasted just because they are uneducated. They might be anyone including sweepers, drivers, cooks, helpers and cleaners, who, though unprivileged have been able to earn a living by spending their day doing their job. They face multiple problems and figure their way out of it. They spend their day in a different way but that does not mean that their day has been wasted just because they did not donate their time reading books and stuff.
It is known that reading has its own advantages and importance in life. There are things that only a reader would understand. For instance, the feeling of exploring the deeper meaning of a Shakespearean dialogue can only be understood by a true Shakespeare reader. The fantasy worlds created by Enid Blyton can only be explored by the enthusiastic children. Only an economist can understand and decipher the true meaning of economy. Therefore, reading is an important activity and its importance
