Beep...Beep...Beep...Beep. This is the sound our alarm clock made at 4:30 on the morning of November 24, 2015. It was opening day of Illinois shotgun season (deer season) and my dad and I could not be more excited about our hunt! I checked the weather on my phone to determine the amount of clothing I should wear. The weather app said it was in the low 20s, so we needed to wear many layers. I went out to start the truck to warm it up and about 5 minutes later, we were headed out!
The drive to our hunting ground was approximately 5 minutes, so I didn’t get much time to enjoy the warmth of my dad’s truck. Once we pulled up to our land, my dad and I had a 10 minute four wheeler ride. Then we parked and had another 15-20 minute walk to our tree stands. After our long walk, we both were shedding layers because we were sweating. My tree stand was before my dad’s, so he stopped and made sure I got situated, and off he went to his stand. Now, the fun part of the hunt begins!
My tree stand is set up on a large flat, on top of a ridge. It was just before daylight and I heard leaves crunching behind me. I sat up and turned around to see a doe walking down the path my dad was just walking. I let her feed past me, and I went back to playing on my phone. As I was playing on my phone, a message from my dad popped up on my screen. The message read, “Big buck headed your way”, and I responded with “shooter?” and he sent back “Yes.” That message got my heart racing!
