Intellectual Freedom
In society, the basic skill of reading is a vital skill to have successful life. Unfortunately, people in the world, especially children, may not be taught how to read. One source, the begintoread website states, “One child [at the age of] four grows up not knowing how to read (1).” To use this quote as reference, most slaves were not taught how to read and not taught how to write. Luckily, Frederick Douglass, unlike most slaves, was able to know the read, write, and spell. During this time, a slave to have the knowledge to learn the basics to read, write, and spell was illegal. This was seen as threat slave-owners, which can be assumed this might have been an intellectual threat. In this passage Douglass explains how he feels he suffers to improve his intellectual development, the slave community is at risk of intellectual development, and unable to live the intellectual freedom, or life of the mind. Frederick Douglass’ slave narrative shows how slaves were not able to be educated and not allow for any potential of intellectual development.
In this passage, Douglass demonstrates the idea that for some individuals this appears to be that intellectual freedom is a natural human right.
