National Sleep Foundation (NSF) confirms, “80% of respondents said high schools should start no earlier than 8:00 a.m. each day; nearly one-half of these respondents (47%) said start times should be between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. Only 17% of those polled said high school classes should begin before 8:00 a.m.” Most of the school systems in the United States start school very early in the morning, and there are a lot of parents want to change this habit by requesting the school to start after 8:00. Some schools have accepted the request, but others have not. Insufficient sleep is common among high school students, and schools should start later because it can reduce the tardiness, risk of drowsy driving, and experiencing depressed moods. Tardiness has been one of the most important concerns to all the schools in the United States, there are many reasons that could be the cause of being tardy in class, and lack of sleeping at night is one of them. However, the school can help students by starting school later, for example, the NSF, a foundation of educational and scientific not-for-profit organization, reports, “A study by Dr. Kyla Wahlstrom at the University of Minnesota, demonstrates the impact of pushing back school start times.
