Growing up, I seemed to make a lot of friends easily but not many of the friendships would last because I moved or we had different classes the next year. My first best friend was Anna; we met in first grade and were attached at the hip after the first day of meeting. Our friendship lasted for two years before I moved away and was forced to go to another school. In third grade, I made a new friend Kayla, and we were crazy and a handful.
Kayla and I created our own jokes and code words for everything. We spent a lot of time laughing at one another. I was so excited when my mom said we could have a sleepover because that meant I got to go home with Kayla on the bus. The holy grail of school was to ride home on someone else’s bus. You were treated like a celebrity. The second the office would send you a pink slip saying you were to go home on a different bus, everyone was questioning you and the day had just began.
The attention for the other kids on the bus is nice, and it makes you feel pretty cool. Kayla and I had countless sleepovers after our first. We would go back and forth between each other’s houses. We both knew if her step-dad Bob was making mac and cheese, I was coming over for dinner because of my addiction to mac and cheese. We would watch so many movies when I stayed at her house or we would spend time playing outside on electric scoters.
