1. The definition of leadership varies to each individual person and is greatly influenced on those who have influenced them in someway either positive or negative in the pass. My own personal definition of leadership is guiding a group of people toward a common goal or vision. During my last 27 years of service I have served under a variety of leaders, some good and some bad but have always learned something and have taken something away from their own style of leadership and have applied it to my own way of leading.
2. The person who had the most influence on me is easily without a doubt CWO Tim Seaman. Words cannot describe how much respect and admiration I have for him. I initially met Tim when I reported to the MAT Team in Key West. I had endured some rough times over the last few years prior to reporting. He later admitted to me he had reservations about me when I first received orders to the unit. We sat down and he asked me one simple question “what do I wish to accomplish and what have I learned over my last few years in my career?” We talked and wrote down some simple goals and how to achieve them. He let me run my shop the way I wanted to and gave me the space I needed to operate freely. He also taught me that being a leader was more than just telling people what to do and holding them accountable but that I needed to hold myself accountable…
