I was raised in a household in which intelligence and education were greatly valued. I was homeschooled until 6th grade and my mother, who served as my teacher, was never lenient on my brother or me. She worked us harder than a normal teacher likely would have. My mother often stressed how important knowledge was. Since I can remember, I have loved learning new things. Once I learned to read, I read everything in sight, with a dictionary at my side to look up words I did not yet know. Unlike many of my friends, I generally looked forward to school once I was enrolled in the public education system. Even once I entered college, I spent my first four years taking all types of different classes for the sake of learning. My point in all of this is that I have always felt comfortable in a learning environment. Thinking of my favorite and least favorite teachers in school, as well as the type of teacher my mother was, I can begin to formulate my idea of what a good teacher is, the type of teacher I want to become. I believe that good teachers keep their classroom safe by promoting respect and encouragement, believe in their students and sets high expectations, and makes instruction differentiated and interesting. Doing these things will make students more likely to thrive and succeed in the classroom.
