While financial analysts, government officials, and employment specialists frequently disagree on conditions existing in the American economy today, everyone concurs with the idea that a college graduates possessing a degree in the field of computer engineering is in the enviable position of being able to pick and choose among job offers with several major computer companies and other Fortune 500 employers. Over the last five years, demand for computer engineers has grown due to the rapid growth and advances in the computer industry. According to a recent issue of U.S. News and World Report, computer engineering is one of the hottest job markets in the country. A computer engineer with special training in the target area may expect to earn approximately $45,000 to start and perhaps as much as $75,000 with experience in the specific application or field of the position (Brindley 97). Corporate recruiters are scrambling to find applicants to fill the available positions, and many job applicants will have several offers to consider (Schmidt 32). IBM, who less than a decade ago was dramatically downsizing its workforce in the wake of a severe financial loss, sought four thousand entry level employees in 1997 to work in every part of the country (Schmidt 32). Once the epitome of corporate organization and structure, IBM has shed business suits for jeans and revolutionized its recruiting style, even recruiting college students on the beaches of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, during spring break (Schmidt 32).
